Last week, a man was arrested and charged with theft after leaking a 40-minute gameplay video of Starfield. The accused, now identified as Darin Harris, was not arrested for the leaks as such, but for stealing more than 60 copies of the highly anticipated game.
Thanks to a new police report, we know more details about this strange case involving Bethesda's RPG. It was revealed that Harris had to pay a fine of thousands of dollars to be released and that his encounter with the courts is still pending.
Starfield leaker faces the full weight of the law
The initial report indicated that Harris stole various items from a warehouse where he worked. It was said that among the merchandise were a few copies of Starfield; however, we now know that the subject had in his hands 67 copies of the title, whose value amounts to $4600 USD.
In addition to leaking footage of the game, Harris attempted to sell several of the copies online for a juicy profit. His identification and arrest was made possible because he recorded himself enjoying the game prematurely and when he sent some of the stolen copies by parcel post.
Shortly after, he realized the impact of his actions and decided to close his social networks. His arrest occurred last August 24, when police obtained a warrant to search his home. There they found the stolen merchandise and several copies of the game ready to ship.
Harris got into more serious trouble as police found 3 guns and drugs in his home. He tried to save himself and argued that he had purchased all the copies of the game with his money, which was later proven to be a lie.
Due to all his crimes, the authorities fined him $10,000 USD which he has already paid. However, his case is not yet closed, as he will visit the courts on September 8.
