Pokémon is one of the most important franchises today, with regional, international, and world tournaments for its games. To match this significance, The Pokémon Company has announced that it will double the prizes for its official tournaments.
A few days ago, the Pokémon World Championships 2024 concluded and it was perhaps the most significant in history. To kick off the next competitive season, the company revealed that it will increase the cash prize pool for regional, international, and the world tournaments, held in August each year.
This increase aims to "reflect current attendance numbers." However, it's important to note that the number of participants will no longer affect the cash prizes. This means that players will know in advance how much money is at stake before knowing the total number of participants in a specific tournament.
The most benefited categories from this change will be the Master divisions for video game tournaments (Pokémon Scarlet & Violet) and collectible card games (Pokémon TCG), as these categories have the most participants. While video games are the preferred format in the Pokémon world, it's the Pokémon TCG tournaments that offer the juiciest prizes.
The prize pool will be "equivalent" or slightly larger in the Junior and Senior divisions, as well as in Pokémon GO tournaments.
How much money will the winners of Pokémon tournaments in 2024 receive?
For the upcoming season (2024), international Pokémon championships will have a cumulative prize pool of over $500,000 USD, to be distributed across Pokémon TCG, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, and Pokémon GO competitions.
On the other hand, the Pokémon World Championships 2024 will offer a cumulative prize pool of over $2 million USD, to be distributed among the winners of Pokémon TCG, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, Pokémon GO, and Pokémon UNITE.
According to details from ComicBook, the winner of the highest category in a regional tournament will receive $10,000 USD (previously $5,000 USD, excluding Pokémon TCG booster packs), while the winner of the video game franchise will take home $6,000 (previously $3,000 USD).
Meanwhile, the Master division winner of the international championship will receive $25,000 USD (previously $10,000 USD), while the winner of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet will receive $15,000 USD (previously $5,000 USD).
Now, the Pokémon TCG Master division player of the Pokémon World Championships 2024 who achieves victory will receive a prize of $50,000 USD, while the winner of the video game category will take home $30,000 USD. In both cases, the amount has also doubled from previous years.
