RUMOR: BioWare Wanted to Release Dragon Age: Dreadwolf This Year but Has Faced Internal Delays

Concerns arise around the studio due to recent employee layoffs

With the upcoming installments of Dragon Age and Mass Effect, BioWare is seemingly playing for its survival, as the studio has faced challenges in recent years and was engulfed in a crisis. The first upcoming release in the spotlight is Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, and recently, information has surfaced that raised alarms: a staff reduction. Although official statements suggest everything is proceeding well, it appears that internally, the situation is different.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf Continues to Face Internal Delays, Possibly Debuting in Summer 2024

According to journalist Jeff Grubb (via Wccftech), the recent layoffs at BioWare are just a part of a process that has turned out to be more complicated than it seemed. Initially, Grubb revealed that the studio's aim was to launch the new installment this year, and he even has information indicating that the target was September 2023. However, the development process became more complex, and delays have been unavoidable. In fact, the release window has been shifted once again: "For a time, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf could have come out this year. Actually, internally at one point, the date they were looking at was next month, September 2023. But internally, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is still getting pushed back. They moved the internal expectations to March 2024 some time ago. Guess what? It's not hitting that either. It's being pushed back again. It's not coming out until summer 2024, and that's being very generous."

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is Being Supported by Developers from the New Mass Effect

Regarding this, Jeff Grubb noted in his report that the summer 2024 window is the most recent piece of information, but it could change at any moment and possibly extend further. The development has required reinforcements, and these are coming from the team working on the new Mass Effect, which has had to pause its work to assist in making Dragon Age: Dreadwolf a reality. Grubb explained, "It's very likely to move again. I expect this game to probably launch late next year. But why put it out late next year when you could push it to EA's last fiscal quarter, which ends in March 2025? This thing could keep moving. Again, summer 2024 is what they're looking at as a possibility. How are they finishing Dragon Age: Dreadwolf? Guess what, they're bringing people from the Mass Effect team, which is being drained a bit so more people can come over and work on Dreadwolf. That naturally means that Mass Effect is getting delayed, so don't expect that anytime soon."
