One Piece is one of the most popular anime series in history, thanks to its epic narrative and great characters. Given its quality, it's normal for it to have influenced many anime and manga series. However, what we never imagined is that it would also be part of the inspiration behind one of the best games of 2023.
Recently, DualShockers had the opportunity to speak with Jaeho Hwang, the director of Dave the Diver. In this interview, he revealed that the game, which became an unexpected sensation, was inspired by several sources.
Among the games that inspired Dave the Diver are Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and the Yakuza franchise (now known as Like a Dragon). However, it also drew inspiration from One Piece, the classic anime.
"The blue hole in Dave the Diver is inspired by the All Blue from One Piece, which is a legendary location in the sea where all the fish from the world gather in one place. This location allowed us to bring together different fish from around the world," he said. "I got a lot of inspiration from games like Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and the Like a Dragon franchise. Those games brought a new level of excitement by combining management systems with mini-game mechanics. I thought we could do something similar with sushi and diving."
Interestingly, the initial inspiration behind Dave the Diver doesn't come from an anime or a video game. In reality, the idea for the game came to Hwang after he encountered an intriguing sushi business.
"The initial idea came to me from a real sushi bar near the ocean, where the owner catches fish in the morning and cooks it to serve at night. I thought it would be a cool concept to turn into a game," Hwang mentioned.
