In an unexpected move, SEGA announced the purchase of Rovio earlier this year. Like other acquisitions, the deal between the Japanese company and the Finnish studio went through a review process that finally came to an end with favorable results. Thus, Rovio now has a new home and SEGA is now the owner of Angry Birds.
Rovio and Angry Birds are now in SEGA's hands
Through its social networks, SEGA confirmed that everything went well with the purchase of Rovio. So the Finnish studio is now part of its family. The Japanese company was excited to welcome all the talent of the team in charge of Angry Birds.
In case you didn't know, SEGA paid $775 million for Rovio. Its goal is to leverage the studio's expertise in the mobile market to boost its business and franchises. This will be possible thanks to Beacon, a Rovio platform with all the necessary tools to develop and distribute mobile games.
On the other hand, Angry Birds is still a profitable franchise with millions of fans worldwide. So SEGA probably has big plans to bring it back to its glory days.
Additionally, SEGA is interested in how Rovio expanded its stellar franchise beyond video games. This could serve it well to do something similar with some of its most popular sagas, as has happened with Sonic in recent years.
