Gamescom 2023: there will be fewer new game announcements in ONL, Geoff Keighley confirms

The show will focus on updates for already announced titles

Although the biggest season of conferences and announcements takes place during the summer with Summer Game Fest 2023 and related events, there are more interesting initiatives in the following months. One of them is the Opening Night Live, the inaugural show of Gamescom. However, fans would do well to moderate their expectations.

In statements to VGC, host and producer Geoff Keighley revealed that this year's show will focus on providing updates for already announced titles set to debut in the coming months. With this in mind, he hinted that there will be fewer new game announcements.

THERE WILL BE FEWER NEW GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS IN GAMESCOM 2023'S OPENING NIGHT LIVE

It’s going to be an exciting show with new looks at many announced upcoming games like Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong. This year’s ONL is less about announcing brand new projects, and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year." commented Geoff Keighley.

We will have to wait to discover which games will make an appearance in the broadcast that kicks off the European event. As a reference, last year's program lasted approximately 2 hours and showcased over 35 titles.

"The sense of community at Gamescom is so unique and powerful – there really is nothing else like it in the world. Even before I was involved in ONL, I loved coming to Gamescom because it has such a focus on the players and community," the host emphasized.

During the interview, Geoff Keighley acknowledged that, unlike the Summer Game Fest or The Game Awards ceremony, the ONL presents unique challenges due to its location in Europe and its relationship with participating partners. "We’re always trying to find ways to create synergy between what’s happening on the floor and inside ONL", he commented.
