Since its official announcement, Baldur's Gate 3, the latest installment in the acclaimed role-playing game franchise, caught the attention of thousands of fans and immediately became one of the most anticipated projects in recent years. While a good reception was expected at its release, few could have predicted the magnitude of its success.
After a long period of early access, Larian Studios' RPG was released on PC in early August. During its first hours on the market, it surpassed 500,000 concurrent players, positioning itself as one of the strongest releases of 2023 and recent history on Steam.

Baldur's Gate 3 triumphs on Steam
The success continues for this hardcore role-playing video game. Over the weekend, it surpassed the impressive milestone of 717,000 concurrent users, according to data from SteamDB. At the time of writing, it is the second most played game on the Valve platform, only behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
These impressive numbers make Baldur's Gate 3 one of the most popular video games in the history of Steam. It surpassed Goose Goose Duck and Apex Legends, entering the top 10. However, it is still far from the records of Hogwarts Legacy (879,308), ELDEN RING (953,426), and Cyberpunk 2077 (1,054,388). Will it manage to surpass them? Only time will tell.
This is an impressive success, even surpassing the developers' expectations. In a Twitter post, Swen Vincke, founder of Larian Studios and head of the project, mentioned that their predictions were 100,000 concurrent players. The large influx of players caused issues on Valve's platform and the studio's forums.
Certainly, Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the great successes of 2023. While its reach was hard to predict, it was undoubtedly poised to be a powerful release. At the end of the day, it sold 2.5 million units during its early access period.

Baldur's Gate 3 is now available on PC. The PS5 version will arrive on September 6, while the port for Xbox Series X|S is still in development without a release date.
