PlayStation 5 has left behind the scarcity period and pandemic difficulties and is now heading towards success, aiming to match the sales of its predecessor, the PS4, and then surpass it. Recently, Sony celebrated 40 million units sold and this was possible thanks to its commercial performance in important markets, such as the United States, where it claimed the top position once again.
PlayStation 5 dominates in the United States while Switch and Xbox Series X|S struggle
The market analysis firm, Circana, shared its report on console and video game sales in the USA for June of this year, and regarding hardware, there are interesting news. To begin with, analyst Mat Piscatella revealed that there was a 22% increase in console sales compared to June 2022, translating into sales of $454 million, a figure that marks the best hardware commercial performance for June since 2008 when $617 million was spent.
Year-to-date hardware spending remains 23% higher when compared to the same period in 2022, at $2.6 billion.

Getting into the specifics, Circana reports that PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in June in the USA, both in units and dollar sales, achieving such success that Sony's console reached sales levels not seen since 2008. Furthermore, PS5 remains the best-selling console of the year in both categories, making the first half of 2023 a tremendous success for Sony. Finally, the report indicates declines in the sales of Switch and Xbox Series X|S during June.
