SEGA revealed why they didn't want to make Sonic Mania 2

The Japanese company made a decision regarding the type of audience that follows the blue hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog is experiencing a resurgence after years of not receiving the recognition it deserved in the gaming industry. Of course, the success of the movie played a part in this, but it all started with the release of Sonic Mania, a great 2D masterpiece that reminded players of the franchise's greatness and its origins. The title achieved the success and reception it deserved, which naturally led fans to expect a sequel, but it never happened, and the reason behind this was recently revealed.

This is the reason why there won't be a Sonic Mania 2

During an interview with Game Informer (via Nintendo Life), Takashi Iizuka, responsible for the Sonic the Hedgehog IP, talked about what happened with Sonic Mania and the reason why it didn't receive a sequel. According to him, SEGA decided to focus on Sonic Superstars, a title that combines the franchise's 2D legacy with 3D, instead of working on another game with the Headcannon team. The reason behind this decision was that another Sonic Mania would only appeal to the pixel art-loving fanbase.

In his statement, Iizuka said: "When you make a 2D game using pixel art, you end up targeting a very specific core audience. We wanted to bring this game to as many people as possible and to make it look and feel attractive to a broader audience, we needed to use 3D assets to give it that modern look. However, we know that the core fans want that old classic Sonic look, they want that old classic Sonic feel, so we focused on making sure the controls were solid and that the look and feel were truly representative of a classic Sonic game."

With this statement, SEGA put an end to the speculations about any differences or conflicts with Headcannon. However, it's also evident that the chances of seeing Sonic Mania 2 are quite slim, at least in the short and medium term.
