With an annual release for a long time, it's clear that Call of Duty has a lot of titles under its belt. For a portion of the community, the entries that debuted on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation are the best. Although these games were forgotten for years, they recently regained popularity on Microsoft's console.

While the servers for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 remained active after their release, in recent years it became increasingly difficult to find a match that was free of cheaters and hackers. Additionally, a matchmaking problem resulted in excessively long waiting times.

A few days ago, reports emerged indicating that an unannounced update fixed the matchmaking and servers for the Xbox 360 versions of these classic titles. When news of stable online services finally reached the community, thousands of players returned to enjoy matches just like in the old days.

Unlike the more recent releases, the older games display the number of players currently connected on the main menu. While the figure may not be exact, it serves as a good indicator. According to reports, over 150,000 people enjoyed these classic titles over the weekend.

While CoD: Black Ops brought together over 127,000 people in the last few hours, its sequel gathered over 10,000 players. Likewise, the controversial CoD: Modern Warfare 3 had around 7,000 users. It appears that other titles like CoD: World at War and CoD 4: Modern Warfare also experienced a boost in recent days.

It's no surprise that these titles saw a significant resurgence in popularity once online services were fixed. After all, the Xbox 360 versions are backward compatible, allowing fans to play and enjoy a dose of nostalgia on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

Unfortunately, the PC and PlayStation 3 versions are still experiencing connection and matchmaking issues. Currently, Microsoft platforms are the best option for enjoying the retro releases.

This news comes shortly after Microsoft won the FTC lawsuit regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Last weekend, Phil Spencer confirmed that he signed an agreement with Sony to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms. According to reports, the deal will last for 10 years.
