A modder made the community believe that the Nintendo Switch game had a secret shortcut

Mario Kart 8 was one of the gems of the now-defunct Wii U that later made its way to the Nintendo Switch with great success. Despite a long time having passed since its release, it still has a very loyal fanbase that gathers every day to race on the tracks. That's why players raised an eyebrow when a supposed secret came to light.

All the racing game's circuits are full of shortcuts and alternate paths that players can take to gain an advantage and surpass their rivals. The community has already explored all the nooks and crannies to find the best strategies for completing the tracks with the most efficient times.

However, this week, a player known as Musebrot uploaded a video that surprised everyone and unintentionally trolled thousands of players.

Unintentionally, a modder trolled thousands of Mario Kart 8 fans

In the video, the player competes on the Cheep Cheep Beach track. Everything seems normal, but at one point, they access an alternate route underwater that redirects them to the top of the island. Of course, the transition from land, sea, and air is very natural and follows the structure of many Mario Kart 8 circuits.

As a result, dozens of fans believed that the footage was real and that the Cheep Cheep Beach track always had a secret shortcut in plain view for everyone. "I didn't know that [path] existed until now, oh my god!" exclaimed one surprised person. "Was there an alternate route all this time, and I never knew?" questioned another incredulous fan.

Now, is the shortcut real? Unfortunately, no. What happened is that the video shows a mod that adds that section to the map. In fact, Musebrot is a modder known for modifying tracks in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It seems that his latest project went viral and unintentionally trolled thousands of fans.

To some extent, this story is reminiscent of the unique case of NieR: Automata. Last year, someone claimed to have discovered a secret area in Yoko Taro's RPG video game. The finding surprised thousands of fans, but it turned out to be a mod that adds an unseen section. Later, the person responsible for the project made it available to the public for anyone to download and install.
