SEGA and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio recently surprised their fans by surprisingly releasing Yakuza games on GOG, the popular DRM-free game store for PC. However, the excitement soon turned controversial because of a small but significant change the studios made to the games.
What happened? That SEGA removed Toshihiro Nagoshi and other important creatives who were key to the creation and development of the franchise from the credits of all the games. As you can imagine, this infuriated several fans of the saga, who think that the move is not fair at all.
SEGA is criticized for changes in Yakuza
According to details, SEGA modified the credits of the 7 main installments of the saga to erase the names of Toshihiro Nagoshi, Daisuke Sato, as well as that of all Lab42 and QLOC employees, who were instrumental in the development of the titles.
In case you don't know, Nagoshi was one of the most prominent creatives at SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. He was also the father, producer and supervisor of the Yakuza saga for years. In 2022 he left the companies to found Nagoshi Studio and join NetEase.
Daisuke Sato and other prominent Yakuza developers joined him in this new venture, so they also left SEGA. Gamers believe that this is the main reason why SEGA removed their names from the credits.
It is important to note that this only happens in the GOG versions of the games. Despite this, fans lashed out at SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, as they believe that those creatives brought the saga to what it is now and therefore their work deserves recognition and respect. Some gamers compared this situation to Konami, Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear Solid.
"This to me is far worse than anything Sega and RGG have done recently. Game companies removing people they disapprove of from credits is disgusting and unacceptable. It is an attack on workers at the most fundamental level," stated one gamer.
