Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 are approaching their 3-year mark in the market, and it seems that the generation is just getting started. Fortunately, it appears that these platforms still have several years of life ahead, as according to Microsoft, the next generation of consoles will arrive in 2028.
In documents from the Activision Blizzard acquisition case obtained by IGN, Microsoft states that they expect the next generation of consoles to debut in 2028. This would mean that the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox would debut 8 years after their predecessors: Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
Microsoft mentioned this while discussing a deal they offered to Sony, in which they committed to releasing Call of Duty on PlayStation for 10 more years. According to Microsoft, it would be an agreement that would be valid during the first 2 years of the next generation of consoles.
"In any case, this term would go beyond the anticipated period for the start of the next generation of consoles (in 2028)," stated Microsoft. "Thus, Call of Duty will be published on successive PlayStation consoles if one is released during the term of the agreement."
Let's remember that Sony previously revealed that the earliest we can expect to see the next PlayStation is in 2027. This means that the current generation of consoles would have a cycle of between 7 and 8 years, which is not unreasonable.
It should be noted that what Microsoft declares are only estimates and the release of a console depends on many external and internal factors. Therefore, it is likely that we may see the new consoles before or after 2028. That being said, it is interesting to know the year that Microsoft has in mind for the release of their new console.
