Bethesda confirms that Indiana Jones will be exclusive to Xbox and will not come to PlayStation 5

The adventure game was originally intended as a multiplatform release.

Indiana Jones, the video game being developed by MachineGames and Bethesda based on the famous film franchise, will be exclusive to Xbox and PC. This was confirmed by Bethesda as part of the hearing for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard in the United States. Interestingly, it was originally planned to be a multiplatform release.

Pete Hines, head of publishing at Bethesda, confirmed that Indiana Jones will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. This means it is coming to Xbox consoles, PC, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also means that we will not see it on PlayStation 5 or any other Sony console.

An interesting detail is that Hines confirmed what many already suspected: Indiana Jones was originally intended to be a multiplatform title. In fact, he pointed out that the agreement ZeniMax signed with Disney to develop this project indicated it would be a multiplatform release.

That being said, once the agreement was closed in which Microsoft acquired ZeniMax and all its game studios, Bethesda renegotiated the agreement with Disney. This was done so that Indiana Jones will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem and be available on its release day on Xbox Game Pass.

Let's remember that when Microsoft acquired Bethesda, they assured that they would respect the agreements they had with other companies. That is why DEATHLOOP and Ghostwire Tokyo remained as timed exclusives for PlayStation 5 even though Microsoft already owned Bethesda and all its studios.

On the other hand, games like Starfield, Redfall, and now Indiana Jones went from being planned as multiplatform releases to becoming exclusives of the Xbox ecosystem. According to Hines' statements in court, decisions about exclusivity are made on a "case-by-case" basis, and releases that only come to Xbox benefit from being developed for a single console and PC.
