Matt Booty discussed Xbox's lack of interest in virtual reality

Unlike PlayStation, Xbox has turned its back on technology such as virtual reality. Although the company has entertained the idea of incorporating it into its games, it has not yet taken the plunge and, it seems, will not do so in the near future.

During a recent interview, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, decided to talk about the subject and explain once and for all why they have not bet on virtual reality. From his perspective, this market is still very small, so they don't see a big opportunity in it.

The VR market is very small from Xbox's perspective

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter (via VGC), Booty stated that the virtual reality and augmented reality market is still too small to get into. He believes Xbox should be patient and wait longer to seriously think about joining the said sector.

The executive pointed out that some Xbox IPs are quite popular, so they have had several titles that have surpassed 10 million players. So they would need to have similar numbers to be interested in a project involving virtual reality or augmented reality.

"I think for us, it’s just a bit of wait until there’s an audience there. We’re very fortunate that we have got these big IPs that have turned into ongoing franchises with big communities.

“We have 10 games that have achieved over 10 million players life-to-date, which is a pretty big accomplishment, but that’s the kind of scale that we need to see success for the game and it’s just, it’s not quite there yet with AR, VR," Booty explained.

So it looks like Xbox won't be entering the virtual reality market any time soon, where companies like Sony, Valve and Meta already have a presence.
