Bethesda recently talked about Starfield performance on Xbox X Series X|S and confirmed that it will run at 30 fps. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, decided to delve into the subject, as he knows it is very important for the community, especially after what happened with Redfall.
The executive pointed out that Starfield's 30 fps is not due to a problem with the potential of their systems, as they have proven that they can move games at 4K and 60 fps. Thus, everything is due to a creative decision on the part of Bethesda. On the other hand, Spencer took the opportunity to ask players not to turn every game into "a math exercise".
Phil Spencer justifies the 30 fps of Starfield
During an interview with Giant Bomb (via Pure Xbox), Spencer acknowledged that fps and resolution are important elements in a game; however, he believes that they do not determine how great a title can be.
In this sense, he believes that gamers should trust a bit more in the decisions of developers, who have reasons to focus on a specific configuration. In the case of Starfield, Spencer noted that it is indeed a creative decision on Bethesda's part.
"It's a creative choice. We obviously have games that are running at 4K/60 on the platform. It’s not a platform issue, it’s a creative decision. I trust the decisions Bethesda Game Studios makes, and I trust what I'm playing," Spencer said.
On the other hand, he stated that he understands gamers' concerns regarding these technical elements, but he believes that we should not turn video games into something purely mathematical, where resolution or fps determine how good a title is.
Thus, he believes that Starfield will be a superb game and is confident that Bethesda made the best decisions for its technical section.
"I don't ever want us to turn playing games into a math exercise... I'm not saying that 60 fps or resolution don't impact what you play, but I don't think we want that to turn into an Excel thing. I think you want to give the creatives the tools to make the best decisions, and the game will be what it is. I think Starfield's going to be a great game and I love the reception today, and I don't want to kind of force specs on every game before they start," Spencer concluded.
