Today, Variety (via VGC) published a controversial interview with Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, and while the topic discussed was the abuse and violence cases the company is accused of, there was also an opportunity to reveal some secrets. One of them accounts for the plans that Activision Blizzard had not long ago to become an entertainment monster. How would they achieve it? With an acquisition that surely would have caused a stir at that time.
According to Kotick, in 2018 during the Time Warner acquisition process by AT&T, Activision Blizzard was ready to emerge as a purchase option in case regulators blocked the deal. The Call of Duty company had an offer ready in case the $85.4 billion purchase fell through, and if it had, Activision would have become the owner of the DC Comics, Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter franchises, and virtually everything that exists in Warner Bros. Discovery today.
Regarding this, Kotick stated: "We would take their IPs and turn them into video games. They would take our franchises and turn them into film and television; we would have an extraordinary company. We raised all the capital and were ready for it in case AT&T couldn't close the deal."
