Marathon: Bungie shares news that will disappoint a few fans

The return of the franchise is not what many players were expecting

After many years of absence, Bungie will revive Marathon with a new installment that raised the hype of many players. However, there are also somewhat disappointed fans, since the return of the franchise will not be what many expected.

The saga will change its formula from a classic FPS to an extraction shooter with a multiplayer approach. Because of this, players are wondering if Bungie is planning some kind of campaign or single-player component for the title. The company has already answered this question and revealed other details of its next game, but surely not everyone will be happy with the answer.

Players should not expect a campaign in Marathon

Being an extraction shooter, Marathon will focus entirely on the PvP component. While Bungie promised that the game will explore the lore of its FPSs from years ago, it confirmed that the new installment will not have a campaign or a similar single-player experience.

From the studio's perspective, Marathon will offer a great combination of an extraction shooter and a strong narrative component, which will be delivered through an atmospheric world and its evolution.

The company revealed that the game will be playable in squads or solo, but always with a PvP approach. As it is a multiplatform release, they are already working on features such as cross-play and cross-save.

On the other hand, they want the experience to be the best for everyone, so the game will have dedicated servers. They also promised effective measures against cheaters. The studio said:

"Marathon is designed from the start as a PvP-focused game and won't have a single-player campaign. Instead, with the PvP experience as our foundation, we're creating opportunities for player-driven stories to unfold, stories that are integrated with the overarching game narrative.

"We're building a world full of persistent, evolving zones, where players create their own journey with every run they take."
