After four years since the release of the last game, the Mortal Kombat franchise is ready to return in 2023. Official details remain scarce, but a new clue suggests that the formal announcement of the new video game will take place in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, an insider shared some very interesting information.
Through his Twitter account, the famous user billbil-kun revealed the supposed first details of the new iteration of NetherRealm Studios' IP. There's good news and bad news.
MORTAL KOMBAT 1 COULD BE ANOTHER REBOOT; IT WOULD DEBUT SOON
The insider reported that the new iteration of the saga will be called Mortal Kombat 1, so everything seems to indicate that it will be another reboot. This coincides with previous reports and theories. Additionally, he commented that it will have three editions: Standard, Premium, and Kollector's Edition.
Finally, billbil-kun shared news that will disappoint a huge sector of the community. Specifically, he indicated that the video game will only be available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, which means that PS4 and Xbox One are out of the equation. This implies that thousands of fans who only have one of the previous generation consoles from Microsoft or Sony won't be able to play this title.
As you may notice, game will be available for Next-Gen consoles only (while including Nintendo Switch)

Comes in 3 editions:
- Standard
- Premium
- Kollector's Edition (Physical only, not available for Nintendo Switch)
Announcement should be close
Windows Central corroborated this information and supplemented it. It indicates that, according to its sources, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games may decide to release Mortal Kombat 1 at some point in September 2023. The official announcement is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
Furthermore, the news outlet reminded that they heard that the first fighter pass of the new installment will feature Peacemaker from DC Comics and Homelander from The Boys, among other characters.
Of course, it's striking that Mortal Kombat 1 will arrive on Nintendo Switch, but not on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Fans theorize that the version that will debut for the hybrid console will work through cloud technology, similar to what happens with other titles like Resident Evil Village.
Anyway, it's important to note that, at the time of writing these lines, this information lacks official confirmation. We recommend taking it with a grain of salt and waiting for a formal announcement from the developer or publisher.
But tell us, do you think the absence of PS4 and Xbox One will affect the game's sales? Do you like that it's a new reboot? Which characters would you like to see in the new installment? Let us know in the comments.
