The Illumination film has been in theaters for 5 weeks and is still breaking records

The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted in early April and received negative reviews from professional critics. Did that affect its box office performance? Not at all! Right now, is one of the most successful productions of recent years.

A few days ago, the Illumination and Nintendo animated film exceeded the $1 billion mark at the box office worldwide. While it is slowly losing momentum, it still has a privileged place in the box office.

The SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE IS UNSTOPPABLE AND REACHES A NEW RECORD

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has reached a new milestone. Specifically, it has already grossed more than $500 million in the United States, giving an impressive total of $1,159,287,654 USD worldwide. Thus, it becomes the fourth post-pandemic film to exceed $1 billion and one of the most successful animated films in history.

According to the latest report, the film inspired by Nintendo's video games is now the sixth highest-grossing animated film of all time, meaning it has surpassed Pixar's Toy Story 4. Everything indicates that it will climb at least one more step. We say this because it is very close to Minions, a film that grossed $1,159,398,397 USD.

The fourth place is held by Incredibles 2, the third place belongs to Frozen, in second place is Frozen 2 and at the top is the controversial remake of The Lion King. Without a doubt, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has a long way to go to reach the top.

After dominating the box office for 5 consecutive weeks, the film about Nintendo's mustached hero lost the crown to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But tell us, do you think the video game adaptation will reach the top? Let us know in the comments.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is still in theaters in the United States, Japan, Mexico and more countries.
