The latest adventure of the blue hedgehog has already sold 3.5 million units

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most important franchises in the video game industry. However, it has an irregular track record. While the classic 2D releases are cult games that received almost universal praise, the 3D titles are much more divisive. It seems that SEGA finally hit the mark.

Last year saw the debut of Sonic Frontiers, the first open-world game in the popular franchise. While it was far from perfect and received mixed reviews from the specialized press, it was able to find its place in the hearts of the fans.

The good reception was reflected in its commercial performance. The latest title of the blue hedgehog immediately proved to be a resounding success and even exceeded SEGA's expectations. The March report indicated that it shipped 3.2 million units worldwide since its launch.

Sonic Frontiers is an absolute success

In a recent press conference held between SEGA and Rovio in Finland, Shuji Utsumi, president of transmedia at SEGA Sammy, revealed the updated sales figures of the blue hedgehog's video game. Undoubtedly, the data is very interesting.

Specifically, Shuji Utsumi announced that Sonic Frontiers has already shipped 3.5 million units, which means that it sold approximately 200,000 copies in the last months. This is quite an achievement, especially when considering that the first official trailers generated controversy.

While it seems that Sonic Frontiers still has a long way to go to become the most successful 3D game in the franchise, it is already the fastest-selling 3D title of the IP.

Certainly, SEGA's mascot had difficulties making the leap to the third dimension, unlike other exponents like Nintendo's Mario. While many titles gained cult status, another large percentage received extremely negative ratings. Luckily, the latest installment broke the curse and hit the mark.

We will have to wait to find out if this project surpasses Sonic Heroes, which is presumed to be the most successful 3D title of the series with more than 4 million units sold. In the meantime, SEGA is very happy with the latest release and is already preparing new free updates that will arrive throughout 2023.

But tell us, did you give this proposal a chance? What did you think? Let us read your comments.

Sonic Frontiers is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
