PixelOpus, one of PlayStation's most unique studios, will be closing its doors

The company thanked the fans in its farewell letter

The company thanked fans in their farewell letter. In a world where millions are spent on buying studios and distributors, one might think there are conditions for existing studios to grow and thrive. Sadly, the reality is different, and we have a reminder of this reality in the closure of PixelOpus.

Via Twitter, PixelOpus announced that their journey has come to an end. They also took the opportunity to thank all the community of players who were captivated by their games and supported them during their entire existence.

"Dear friends, our PixelOpus adventure has come to an end. As we look for new futures, we wanted to sincerely thank millions of passionate players who have supported us, as well as our mission to make beautiful and imaginative heart-filled games. We are so grateful!" explained the company.

Rob Archibald, environment artist at PixelOpus, shared the announcement of the closure and thanked his time at the company. "I'd like to think that with Concrete Genie, we made the world a little better...and not many games get the chance to try that. I'll always be grateful for my time building many imaginative worlds with this incredible team".

Sony Interactive Entertainment has not yet commented on the reasons behind the closure or the conditions of it. There were reports that PixelOpus was working on a game for PlayStation 5 in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation before the closure.

PixelOpus was a studio founded in 2014 as an internal development team of Sony Interactive Entertainment. In its almost 10 years of history, they released 2 products - Concrete Genie and Entwined - which moved away from Sony's characteristic big-budget productions to opt for a creative and more artistic side. The studio had not announced any new games since the release of Concrete Genie in 2019. However, there were reports indicating that they were already working on a game for PlayStation 5 in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, Sony's animation division responsible for productions like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Peter Rabbit.
