Perhaps you've imagined how great a Metroid movie would be and then wondered why Nintendo hasn't made it happen. Well, you are not alone, as there are thousands of players who would like this, including a renowned filmmaker.
Metroid is one of Nintendo's most beloved franchises but also one of the most neglected. In 2021, it turned 35, but unlike The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, or Kirby, Nintendo did not hold any celebrations and focused strictly on promoting its latest project, Metroid Dread.
Despite this, the fan base has not lost hope that someday the company will treat the franchise with the proper importance and bring it to the big or small screen. We're not just talking about regular fans, even the series' director, Yoshio Sakamoto, wants this, and actress Brie Larson has even volunteered for the role of Samus Aran several times.
Joining the army of people publicly supporting the idea of bringing Metroid to the screen is Neill Blomkamp, known for writing and directing District 9, a film nominated in four Academy Award categories.
A fan recently questioned the South African filmmaker on Twitter about whether he would be interested in making a Metroid movie after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Interestingly, Blomkamp responded "yes" in less than 10 minutes.
The response was brief but clear: there is interest in the project from not only fans but also filmmakers and actors. Unfortunately, what is missing is Nintendo's interest, which is the most important because it is the company responsible for giving the green light to the project.
Blomkamp's post gained a lot of traction on Twitter, becoming one of his most popular with over 7,700 likes and more than 230 comments, many of which support the idea.
Blomkamp gained recognition thanks to District 9, his best film, which showcased his specialization in low-budget projects. The filmmaker worked on three short Halo productions to promote Halo 3 and was close to realizing a movie for the series, but unfortunately, it did not come to fruition and was ultimately canceled. Blomkamp's next project is a big one as he directs the Gran Turismo movie, which will debut in August of this year and looks promising.
