It didn't take long after the premiere of HBO's The Last of Us for it to be confirmed that there would be more seasons. There is great anticipation surrounding the sequel and gradually the first details are coming to light, such as the start of filming, which the producers finally talked about.
While Season 2 is far from being released, any new information about the project is welcome for fans.
Weeks ago, we learned where the shooting would take place, and today we know that the project will begin production in "the coming months and not years," according to Neil Druckmann, one of the producers of the project.
As we saw in Season 1 of The Last of Us, those in charge are taking liberties to present certain events. With this in mind, at the Deadline FYC House + HBO Max event, the creatives were questioned about where the events of Season 2 would be located in the timeline and whether it would pick up days, months, or years after the end of Season 1.
As expected, none of the producers shared more details on the matter, but Craig Mazin explained that they are not ready yet and that they consider it fun to keep some of the mysteries and surprises regarding the show.
If we take into account that the filming of Season 1 of The Last of Us began in July 2021 and concluded in June 2022, lasting 11 months, with around 7 months of post-production before the season premiered in January 2023.
In the best-case scenario, Season 2 would begin filming in July 2023, the same month as Season 1, so if we take into account the same production times, we can estimate that Season 2 should debut in January 2025. In the worst-case scenario, the release could be delayed until late that same year, around November 2025.
It's important to remember that actress Bella Ramsey predicted that Season 2 should be ready by the end of 2024, while actor Pedro Pascal imagined that filming for Season 2 could start at some point in 2023, which coincides with the above estimates.
