Resident Evil 4 Remake has been a massive success both financially and critically, but it hasn't been without controversy. Perhaps the most scandalous and sad is the one involving the actress who played Ada Wong, who almost deleted her social media accounts after being subjected to harassment for her portrayal of the character. The actress is not alone and received support from her colleague and voice actor of Leon S. Kennedy, Nick Apostolides.
The case of actress Lily Gao resonated in the industry and even reached Nick Apostolides, the current voice of Leon S. Kennedy in the Resident Evil games, who was able to work with Gao for the first time thanks to Resident Evil 4 Remake. As a good person and co-worker, the voice actor empathized with the actress and showed his support.
Nick Apostolides Stands Up against Internet Trolls
Although it's not the first time that Apostolides has portrayed Leon S. Kennedy, he knows what it's like to be in Gao's shoes, as he remembers that he wasn't the original actor of this character, and when he first played the role in Resident Evil 2 Remake, he faced fans who harshly criticized his work.
Thus, the actor reached out to Gao and used his own experience to give her some wise advice and encourage her not to take anything personally. He also reminded her that there are people who support her despite the vocal "trolls" who make the most noise on the internet.
"I told her first and foremost that you can't take it personally. Whenever you assume the role of a beloved character, people are going to have their opinions. If people are not happy, those will be the loudest voices," the actor wisely advised. "It's not that you don't have support, it's just that the ones who need to make their voices heard online are the Twitter trolls, and they will make you understand that they don't like you."
Lily Gao had also previously played Ada Wong in the live-action movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), but Resident Evil 4 Remake was her debut in the video game series, and the critiques were clearly harsher this second time around.
The actor's words are more focused on encouraging Gao and making her more resilient to negative comments, but that doesn't mean that internet trolls are right; on the contrary, Apostolides took the opportunity to mention that their behavior is not acceptable.
"Everyone has the right to their opinion, but to throw hate and send messages to actors telling them that they are absolute garbage and to f*** off and never act again, that's not acceptable," Apostolides expressed in an interview with The Gamer. "If you have that much hate in your heart, send it somewhere else. I'm sorry your life has been so bad that you have to do that, but it's very sad."
