Call of Duty has maintained its formula for years, but there have been attempts to renew it and inject it with some freshness. Bret Robbins, former creative director at Sledgehammer Games, revealed that a third-person game based on Uncharted was once planned but was ultimately cancelled. Additionally, he explained why Advanced Warfare 2 never came to fruition.
According to details, the third-person game was in the hands of Sledgehammer Games and was going to be a somewhat different approach to the franchise. The game was going to take place in Vietnam and offer players a third-person adventure.
Robbins noted that the game was like a mix of Call of Duty and Uncharted. He said that it was also going to have some influences from Dead Space in terms of brutality and grittiness. However, the project was cancelled as Activision put Sledgehammer Games to work on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 was cancelled for this reason
Sledgehammer Games also tried to push the boundaries of the franchise with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, a title that wasn't well received by all fans due to its futuristic setting. Robbins revealed that they planned a sequel that was also cancelled.
He explained that they developed a prototype that was ultimately scrapped, as they had the opportunity to work on Call of Duty: WWII. He explained that they prioritized that project as its theme was more in line with the essence of the franchise. So they left the futuristic sequel aside.
