Bethesda confirmed this morning that Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil and The Evil Within, will leave Tango Gameworks in the coming months. So the Japanese Xbox studio will lose one of its most important creatives. Through a brief statement, Bethesda thanked the creative for all his work at Tango Gameworks, the studio he founded and directed. It also highlighted his work as a mentor for new generations of developers and wished him luck in his future.

"We can confirm that Shinji Mikami has decided to leave Tango Gameworks in the coming months. We thank him for his work as a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers on The Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and, of course, Hi-Fi RUSH. We wish Mikami-san well in the future and are excited by what lies ahead for the talented developers at Tango," stated Bethesda via Twitter.

At the time of writing, Mikami has given no hints about his future. In late 2020, he talked about the possibility of directing one last game after all his work on The Evil Within, which suggested a possible retirement. Mikami is known for being the creator of Resident Evil and the director of notable games such as Resident Evil 4 and Vanquish. In 2010 he founded Tango Gameworks, which gave him creative freedom to further explore the horror genre.

In 2020, Microsoft bought Zenimax and Bethesda, so the Japanese developer became part of Xbox Game Studios. For now, it is unclear whether Mikami will leave the industry entirely or if he has plans to work on other projects either independently or with another company.

This decision has taken fans of their various beloved franchises by surprise along with Tango Gameworks' most recent title Hi-Fi RUSH. Many words of thanks and well wishes have been shared by the community for his great contribution to the gaming industry. We wish him the best too and will be glad to see some new work in the future if Shinji wishes to do so.
