God of War Ragnarök was the conclusion of Kratos' arc in Norse mythology as Santa Monica decided not to make a trilogy. Despite the fact that the foundations were already in place for the 2018 installment, the development team thought of some changes that would have perhaps divided opinions.

During an interview with MinnMax (via VGC) Matt Sophos, narrative director of God of War Ragnarök revealed an interesting idea that was taken into consideration at some point at the beginning of development and that could change the initial events of the game.

KRATOS WAS GOING TO DIE AT THE BEGINNING OF GOD OF WAR RAGNARÖK

According to the creative, they thought of giving death to Kratos, this to fulfill the prophecy shown in a mural of the first game so they thought that the protagonist would die at the hands of Thor in one of the initial battles.

In this regard, Sophos stated: "he was gonna die, and then it wasn’t a permanent death. What was going to happen – and I don’t care, we can tell this because it doesn’t happen anymore so this is all fan fiction at this point, he would get pulled out of Hell, essentially, by Atreus."

However, after presenting the idea of Kratos' premature death at the beginning of God of War Ragnarök to the game's director, Eric Williams, he rejected it as he felt that the return of death would be unexciting. In the end, the team recapitulated and from the idea of the prophecy they agreed that it would be better for Kratos to break away from it and show the player that the idea of a written destiny is nonsense:

“Knowing that Norse mythology is all about fate and prophecy and everything, and we wanted to say ‘that’s bullshit’, you know? Nothing is written that can’t be unwritten, as long as you’re willing to make changes in your life then you’re not bound to fate. And so when we landed on that, when we know that was the story we wanted to tell, we knew that Kratos couldn’t die."

This alternative story could be an interesting experience to witness as the final product of this title. Something striking would be to know the reactions and opinions of the players when playing the game with this story, it could even be considered a playable DLC that many would like to try. God of War: Ragnarök is now available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

What do you think about the initial concept for the story that the title could have gotten? Let us know in the comments!
