The Last of Us series is now available on HBO and HBO Max, with new episodes every Sunday, and for the same reason that it is already on the platform, details of the series have begun to emerge.
Some scenes in the series are different from the original game story. However, these changes are not for the worse; they are to expand the context of what is happening. What surprised many is that the first scene of the first episode didn’t introduce Joel or Ellie. Rather, it transported us to a television program in which some scientists discussed pandemics, bacterial infections, and fungi. It's an interesting sequence that serves as an introduction, but originally it was very boring.
According to Craig Mazin, one of the main creatives of HBO's The Last of Us, his original idea for the introduction was different. He was clear that it had to be a scene that presented the latent danger of the cordyceps threat, but the way to do it wasn’t ideal.
A DIFFERENT AND BORING SCENE FOR THE LAST OF US
What was his idea? He wanted to show a sequence of a group of ants being invaded by the cordyceps infection. So they set about making their own documentary video showing this phenomenon, but there was a problem: it was very boring.
“It was kind of boring to watch. It was a bit like a social studies class. He had written it early as if he had found a transcript of a Dick Cavett video from 1969. I remember showing it to Neil [Druckmann], and he thought, 'this is a little weird,'” Mazin said.
The initial sequence was ready, but 3 or 4 weeks after the end of shooting, Mazin couldn't stop thinking that he wasn't happy with the result. So he decided to rewrite it and turn it into the scene millions saw last Sunday.
Was it a good decision? Hard to tell if we can't see the original idea. It is clear that the opening scene that made it to the show is interesting and fulfills the objective of showing the danger of cordyceps infection.
