The Last of Us live-action series is very close to coming to HBO. There is a lot of expectation around it, and it is shaping up to be a great audience success, which would inevitably open the door to new seasons. Will it reach the point where it will dare to continue the history of the games with an unprecedented arc?
This week, The Hollywood Reporter published an interview with Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, producers behind the ambitious HBO series. There, it was reaffirmed that the first season that will debut this month would adapt the events of the original Naughty Dog video game from 2013.

In the same interview, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann hint that the hypothetical second season will cover the story arc of The Last of Us: Part II. This sequel debuted in 2020 for PlayStation 4 and is embroiled in controversy and criticism.
Druckmann, director of the second installment of the post-apocalyptic franchise, spoke about the possibility of the HBO series going beyond the video game stories and telling a totally original story arc. This seems unlikely, at least at this time.
WILL THE LAST OF US SERIES HAVE AN ORIGINAL STORY AFTER ADAPTING THE GAMES?
Specifically, the director states that there are currently no plans to tell a story in the series that strays from the source material. To justify this decision, he cited Game of Thrones as an example, a series that found it necessary to write an unpublished narrative arc for its last season because there were no more books to adapt. It is no secret to anyone that the last chapters of the fantasy show received a lot of criticism.
“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games. We won't run into the same problem as Game of Thrones, since [The Last of Us] Part II doesn't end in a sequel," said Neil Druckmann.
At the time of writing these lines, HBO has not confirmed that The Last of Us series starring Pedro Pascal will have more than one season. That said, it's hard to tell if a hypothetical second batch of chapters will adapt the second installment of the PlayStation franchise in the first place.
But tell us, would you like an original story for the HBO show? Let us read you in the comments.
The Last of Us will arrive on HBO on January 15, 2023.
