Before HBO made The Last of Us series official, the Naughty Dog franchise was going to have a movie directed by Sam Raimi. Due to various problems and creative differences, the project didn’t come to fruition, as it was aimed to be a huge disaster.
Now that the HBO adaptation is on the way, more details have emerged about the canceled project that wanted to bring The Last of Us to the big screen. We know that very popular actresses were interested in the role of Ellie, a character now in Bella Ramsey's hands.

WHICH ACTRESSES SEARCHED FOR THE ROLE OF ELLIE?
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we know that several actresses were very interested in The Last of Us movie and the role of Ellie. According to the details, Maisie Williams, an actress who worked with Ramsey on Game of Thrones, was one of them.
Williams reached out to Neil Druckmann to discuss the adaptation, which ultimately fell through. On the other hand, it was revealed that Kaitlyn Dever, actress of An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong, Justified, and other productions, also wanted to be Ellie.
The report reveals that Dever even did a script reading to prove that she had the potential for the role. The actress has been a frontrunner for Ellie for several years; however, the film was canceled, and her plan could not come to fruition.
It's not clear if these actresses auditioned for the HBO series, but we do know that the search for actors restarted as soon as this new adaptation was proposed. Thus, neither Williams nor Dever was considered at first or before the auditions.
Both Craig Mazin and Druckmann again praised the work of Bella Ramsey, who ultimately stuck with the popular character. The creatives assured that she is the one since she meets the requirements of showing herself as vulnerable and wise and can also be tough and violent.
