The Last of Us series will introduce us to Joel and Ellie from a new perspective, as those responsible for production want to offer a more realistic and human side of each character. For this reason, Joel will suffer from problems typical of his age, and he will not necessarily be the man of action many expect.

Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, writers of the HBO series, revealed that the protagonist would suffer from some ailments due to the life he has led before and after the outbreak. Thus, we will see Pedro Pascal's character suffer from not hearing well and annoying knee pain.

JOEL WILL PLAY AN ORDINARY OLDER MAN IN THE LAST OF US SERIES

During an interview with The New Yorker (via ComicBook), Druckmann explained that he spoke to Mazin about "the physical toll Joel's life would have taken on him." In this way, they concluded that presenting the character with some physical problems was best.

"So, he's hard of hearing on the one hand because of being shot. His knees hurt every time he stands up. I guess there's a tone where Tom Cruise can do anything. But I like my middle-aged people, Mazzin stated.

So, Joel will not be the classic man of action that can do anything. He will be more realistically depicted as an ordinary man who will fight for his cause. He will be forced to take action despite his problems and the context in which he lives.

The creatives did not talk about Ellie's representation, but apparently, the protagonist will stick even more to what was seen in the Naughty Dog saga.
