Hopoo Games, the game studio that developed the Risk of Rain series of games and the extremely challenging stealth-action hybrid game DEADBOLT, has published a new "Dev Thoughts" video via YouTube on Tuesday, December 20.

This video officially reveals the new title the team has been working on recently, and that is Risk of Rain Returns, a revamp of their first Risk of Rain title released in 2013.

If this is your first time hearing about the 2013 Risk of Rain title, it is an "action platformer with roguelike elements," as Hopoo Games states. It has a "permanent death primary feature, where players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op."

In the developers' words "Risk of Rain Returns completely overhauls the original and introduces a ton of new content." This remake has updated the codebase, enhanced the audio, and also made rebalancing and gameplay tweaks. But there is a lot more content added that is new.

What is new in this remake?

Hopoo Games said that there are new survivors, survivor abilities, items (some returning from RoR2, some entirely new), enemies, interactables, stage variants (even RoR1 veterans will have to explore again!), and a revamped multiplayer.

It seems that there is a "huge amount more" of new content coming in Risk of Rain Returns, but we will have to wait for the developers to share all of it.

"Risk of Rain Returns is a whole new game and an upgraded experience from the original Risk of Rain"-Hopoo Games

Additional news regarding this franchise is that Gearbox Entertainment purchased the Risk of Rain IP from Hopoo Games a few weeks ago. Gladly, "Hopoo Games will remain the developer of the Gearbox-published Risk of Rain Returns, and Gearbox will both develop and publish potential future titles in the series."

It was said by the game studio that between now and the to-be-confirmed release date of Risk of Rain Returns, more "Dev Thoughts" videos -as well as some smaller updates and teases- will be showcased on their official channels. Indicating that we might have new content to share about this new title in the next few months!
