Inspiration can come in any form, even from the places you never ever thought it will, that’s why we were very surprised when Glauco Longhi, Character Director of the upcoming space horror game The Callisto Protocol admitted that he was inspired by non-other than SpongeBob SquarePants.

In a recent interview with British tabloid newspaper The Sun, Longhi explained the reasoning behind the character design, specifically the creatures we will face in the game.

Did you know?: Oh no! The Callisto Protocol will not be coming out in Japan

Designed based on different needs

Longhi started explaining how they designed every creature in order to not only with the intention it looks cool, but with the idea, this character correctly adapted to the environment and the circumstances.

“The way we designed these creatures was mainly based on different needs. For example, we may need to have a character that runs around on walls, so then we gotta come up with a cool design that allows the creature to climb up the walls and run faster.”

Then he started talking about the art inspiration behind them, as expected sci-fi horror films like Event Horizon and Alien were mentioned, but he also referenced cartoons.

“Even some cartoons, like Spongebob. We look at cartoons on the stylization and movement because, although it's super real and immersive, we stylized a lot of things to make them more appealing. So some of the movements, and in the case of the gore, the blood, and how we remove the limbs, there's a push of style to emphasize some of these actions."

Besides SpongeBob, he also mentioned Disney and Pixar's work as they communicate their intentions immediately with their designs. “They give you the message right away. If there’s a fast character, you get it right away from the strong silhouettes.”
