The latest release of the so beloved Sonic franchise, Sonic Frontiers, has been very well received and loved by most of the community.

Takashi Iizuka, head of the Sonic Team, spoke with Sector revealing this title is the foundation of a new era for the Sonic franchise. He also responds to some common questions many people had regarding the style change the game took.

What did Takashi Iizuka say about the game?

Takashi has been working in the franchise for 30 years and mentioned that one of the first biggest challenges was moving from 2D to 3D with Sonic Adventure. And he believes that "2022 marks another defining moment for the franchise as we move into open-zone platforming gameplay with Sonic Frontiers."

For this title, they wanted to evolve from the classic "linear, stage-clearing 3D action" and turn it into a "new action-packed adventure game where players have the freedom to explore the environment around them." This was considering players' preferences in open-world exploration and freedom to play at their own pace.

"It is a brand-new approach for the franchise."

What also decides this game to be the beginning of a new era for the franchise is when he says that "like Sonic Adventure, our goal for Sonic Frontiers was to create a game that would be the cornerstone of future Sonic games", Takashi then adds "our goal for Sonic Frontiers was to create a game that would be the cornerstone of future Sonic games."

We know that Sonic Frontiers is set in a different story from the previous titles, and Takashi explains were the game is actually located in the Sonic lore:

"the story takes place after Sonic Forces and Team Sonic Racing, where Sonic, Amy and Tails travel to the Starfall Islands in search of the elusive Chaos Emeralds. Sonic sets out alone to find and help his friends, but as he uncovers the mysteries of the island, he is drawn into a different, larger goal."

In case you missed it: Phil Spencer doesn't want Xbox Game Pass to be the industry standard.

Takashi tells us even more about the game, if you want to get into further details you can read it in here. Remember that Sonic Frontiers is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
