Yuji Naka was arrested on suspicion of insider trading against Square Enix in the past few hours. The story was reported by the Japanese portal FNN Prime Online, confirming that a former member of the Japanese giant and a third person was also arrested on the same charge.

The creator of Sonic and the home of Final Fantasy have had a rather turbulent recent history. After the commercial and critical flop that Balan Wonderworld went through, Yuji Naka confirmed his divorce from Square Enix, even going so far as to contemplate retirement from the video game industry.

What does Square Enix have to say about this?

In the meantime that the development of the events is being more thoroughly investigated, through its official website Square Enix commented on the incident, confirming that it is working with the authorities in Tokyo to shed light on the whole affair and saying it is deeply sorry for the way the situation has unfolded.

"We are deeply sorry for this incident's great concern for all concerned. We have handled this incident strictly, even taking disciplinary action toward the suspected employees," Square Enix says. However, more concrete developments cannot be ruled out as early as the next few hours as we wait to see the actual extent of the charges brought against Yuji Naka and the other suspects.

In case you missed it: Sonic Prime confirms its release date in a new trailer.

Yuji Naka has been involved in a dispute with Square Enix since the publication of Balan Wonderworld and his departure from the Japanese publisher and development when he was supposedly removed from the game as the director "around half a year before release."
