Xbox automatically banned 4 Million accounts for cheating this year

Microsoft wants a healthy space for all players

Recently Microsoft published their latest Xbox transparency report, giving us a detailed idea of how they have been moderating content on their platform, so the community can be safe. This report is released bi-annually so, the latest cover everything that happened in the first 6 months of 2022.

Noticed originally by Kotaku, within the report, Microsoft informed that Xbox issued a ban before anyone had reported that an account was misbehaving, meaning that some accounts were automatically banned even after there were created a mere minutes ago.

4 million sounds like a lot

This type of ban comes from the “Proactive Moderation” strategy, which as you may know is a machine-drive content moderation tech that Xbox has been using for years.

The report noted that out of those bans, nearly 4.33 million were for cheating or botting (unauthentic accounts), the latest being one of the most recent problems as some users use them to disrupt play and inflate their friend or follower numbers.

On the other hand, other reasons were violent extremist content, non-consensual intimate imagery, abuse imagery, and grooming of children, which Microsoft has made very clear they are not tolerating at all.

The company also mentioned that “reactive moderation” (when a player reports another player, a message, or other content on the service), is still an important part of their strategy as it is managed by human agents besides the content moderation technologies.

To be fair, this is part of Xbox's efforts to protect and keep a safe community, in their own words:

“The Xbox community is yours. We all bring something unique, and that uniqueness is worth protecting. Whether you are new to gaming or have been playing for decades, you are stewards of this place, protecting each other even as you compete.”
