Xbox LIVE turns 20!

Two decades of a revolutionary service

Some of you may be too young to remember but online services have been quite a journey for console users. Everything started with the SEGA Dreamcast and its SegaNet service however it didn’t work as they expected, here is where Xbox made its move.

On November 15 2002, just a year after the launch of its first console, Microsoft released the online platform that brought an experience that many players were waiting eagerly for. Although we now know it as Xbox Network now, the online environment of Microsoft's gaming proposal is still Xbox LIVE for millions of users who have enjoyed countless experiences with other gamers thanks to the advancement of the Internet for 4 generations.

In case you missed it: Flight Simulator, Phil Spencer was incredulous: he didn't think it would run in real time

A revolution in the console sector

It all started with Unreal Championship a game specially designed to take advantage of the service and then followed by 30 other games that changed the gaming experience of many users. All of this was possible thanks to this concept that was handled since the conception of the console, hardware with hard disk and a broadband connection, just as it was done in computers.

Of course, the official Xbox account and Larry Hryb, one of the key people behind Xbox Live’s development were the first to celebrate 2 decades of the Xbox online environment that has united millions of gamers around the world.

Xbox LIVE began amidst all the uncertainty possible, especially because Microsoft decided to tilt the experience towards broadband connection, a minority in the market in those years, but with time proved right, I mean… HALO 2 anyone?

This service and platform exploited the possibilities of the Internet connection and definitely, and Microsoft demonstrated that online experiences could cease to be exclusive to PCs.
