On several occasions, Phil Spencer has been cautious about NFT and similar technologies such as blockchain, suggesting that their impact and long-term interest still need to be carefully evaluated. However, this does not necessarily mean that Microsoft is completely ignoring them.

Indeed, the company recently invested $14.8 million in convertible bonds from Wemade, a Korean studio known for blockchain-based MMO games (including the popular Legend of Mir). The Korean software house approached blockchain in 2018 and then launched the mainnet Wemix into the market shortly after.

Wemade is focused on blockchain MMOs

Mir 4, the newest game in the Wemade-branded series, is also banking heavily on NFTs in addition to its support for blockchain and offering in-house Draco virtual currency designed specifically for the work. Among other things, Mir 4 has become the first true blockbuster among blockchain games since the company began creating games with these technologies in 2018.

The recent launch of Wemix 3.0, described as "a mega platform-driven and service-oriented ecosystem," points, among other things, to an even more substantial expansion of Wemade's projects.

It is unclear how the investment made by Microsoft will affect its strategies, although, at the moment, it seems highly unlikely that it will want to implement NFT or blockchain technologies within the productions made by Xbox Game Studios.
