Happy Halloween, did you enjoy your night? Hopefully, you did something fun for this spooky weekend, but in case you didn’t… How about playing the scariest game in video game history? We know, we know, when we talk about the horror genre we fall into an endless debate because scary stuff is subjective. Nonetheless, a group of people used the scientific method to prove which is the scariest game of them all.

In case you missed it: 10 Treehouse of Horror stories we all loved since they came out

The Broadband Choices, a firm specializing in measuring Internet connections in the UK, conducted The Science of Scare: Scariest Video Games in 2022, a scientific research project that started in 2020 and has been trying to measure the scariest forms of entertainment available.

Originally, they started ranking scary movies, but this time they have focused their attention on video games, and rightly so, there are a bunch of video games that have scarred us for life.

Try to guess

The firm conducted the test with more than 200 gamers who were asked to play horror titles from the last 30 years. The objective was to measure the number of beats per minute (BPM) while they played to measure the moments when their heartbeat accelerated in response to the terror they experienced.

Let me guess, do you think first place is P.T.? Sadly no. The winner was MADiSON, a horror game developed by the Argentinean studio Bloodious Games. The first-person horror video game is considered the most terrifying game in history as it took players from an average of 65 BPM to 97 BPM with a peak in its most horrifying moments of 131 BPM.

In second place we found Alien: Isolation which took gamers to 96 BPM with a peak of 127 BPM and one of our beloved franchises of the genre, Resident Evil showed up in the Top 10 with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard as their most scariest release.

It's worth noting that P.T. didn’t appear on the list since it is a demo and not a full video game released on the market, however, they assure that it would have won without problems because when doing a small test with 15 players, the recorded beats were 99 BPM, more than what MADiSON achieved.

We will leave the final infographic with the results below:
