Some of The Witcher writers “actively disliked” the games and books says former producer

To the point of mocking the source material

You either love or hate Netflix’s The Witcher live-action series, however, is undeniable the incredible success the production has had, actually, its popularity allowed it to have up to 3 seasons and a spin-off. With this in mind, it is interesting to know that some writers who worked on the project didn’t like the source material at all.

Recently Beau DeMayo former The Witcher producer held an Instagram Q&A, originally reported by fellow news portal The Direct. There he shared a lot of details about his recent works like X-Men '97, a new animated series of the franchise in which he participates as showrunner and some old productions he had worked with, among them The Witcher.

DeMayo said that some writers disliked CD Projekt RED's video games and the original novels written by Polish Andrzej Sapkowski, to the point of mocking the source material.

In case you missed it: The Witcher 4 won’t arrive within a couple of years

That is… awful

In DeMayo’s own words:

"I've been on show - namely Witcher - where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material). It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it. You have to respect the work before you're allowed to add to its legacy.”

The producer was very cautious and refrained from revealing the identity of the creatives who lambasted The Witcher video games and books. Also, it is unknown if those people are working on the Netflix show's Season 3 production.

In case you didn't know, Beau DeMayo worked as a co-producer on 2 episodes of the first season of the live-action series and was the writer of episode 2 of the second season, so he is a reliable source.

Of course, this situation contrasts with what was said a few months ago by those responsible for the series. As pointed out by showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich back in 2019 “All the people involved in the project are big fans of the books and video games”, although she emphasized that they were also inspired by Andrzej Sapkowski's short stories. Now that is a little difficult to believe.

But tell us, are you a fan of the series? Do you think it honours the original material? Let us read you in the comments below!
