Is it an Illumination movie without songs?

There is a lot of expectation around Super Mario Bros: The Movie, as the animated film will hit theatres next year and of course, there are still many doubts surrounding this production. Recently the statements of an actor fueled one of the biggest rumours which have been circulating on the Internet.

In April 2022, reports surfaced that the Illumination and Nintendo feature film will include musical scenes. While there was no hint of such sequences in the first trailer, the rumours gained momentum after actor Jack Black stated during New York Comic-Con 2022 that he used his "heavy metal" roots to play Bowser.

Then, today Keegan-Michael Key, the actor who will bring Toad to life said in an interview with Variety that he had the opportunity to improvise a song in Super Mario Bros. The Movie. He also talked about how he adapted his voice to play the friendly character from the Mushroom Kingdom.

Ok, so… Toad singing…

When questioned if his character will showcase his singing skills in the animated film, the 51-year-old actor and comedian gave a positive answer. He does. I got to improvise a song in ‘Super Mario Bros.,’ which was an absolute blast. That was just a stick of fun, that whole thing.”

Keegan-Michael Key refrained from revealing any further details on the matter, so we don't know how long the tune in question will last or the context of the scene. Still, fans should be either very excited or scared, depending on their expectations.

The actor also explained that directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic helped him come up with the ideal voice to play the character. “There was something about the timbre. I wanted it higher and higher and higher. And that’s where we ended up, and I’m really happy with where we ended up.”

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Super Mario Bros: The Movie will have elaborate musical sequences, although statements from Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key support this theory. If this turns out to be the case, it will be very interesting to hear Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy sing as Mario and Peach, respectively.

But tell us, would you like to hear Toad sing in the movie? Let us know in the comments below and remember Super Mario Bros: The Movie will hit theatres in 2023, mark your calendars.
