A debate has erupted on Twitter about DOOM II: Hell on Earth, the second installment of the iD Software-signed shooter series, which was first released on PC in 1994. Sandy Petersen, one of the game designers involved in the shooter's development, pointed the finger at the game.

DOOM II, according to Petersen, was a "cash grab," or a business operation by iD Software to monetize as much as possible under the DOOM name while putting in as little creative and production effort as possible.

''Doom II was a quickie cash grab, to use some assets from the first game and give the designers something to do while Quake was being built. So when I "complain" about Doom 2 please know that I am fully aware that Quake was well worth it, '' Sandy Peterson said on Twitter.

''DOOM II followed a long pattern of id development. It was a retail sequel to our previous game, just like Spear of Destiny was a retail release for Wolf 3D. Same with our Keen games. It wasn't a cash grab or something to keep us busy,'' John Romero, co-founder of iD Software responded.

DOOM II, developed by id Software and released in 1994, is a critically acclaimed action first-person shooter and the sequel to DOOM (1993). In 2019, an improved version was released for PC, consoles, and mobile devices.
