You seemingly require a phone number to play Modern Warfare 2

Much like Activision Blizzard‘s Overwatch 2

Blizzard came under fire when it announced that Overwatch 2 would require the use of SMS Protect, meaning that you need to connect your phone number to your Battle.net account to play the shooter.

This sparked outrage among players because it meant that anyone without an active mobile line (no prepaid) would be unable to play. Blizzard quickly reversed its decision, but Activision is still working to incorporate the system into future releases, including the upcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

''Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, newly created Overwatch 2 accounts, and newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number,'' the official statement reads.

"Messaging apps such as iMessage (iOS) or WhatsApp (iOS, Android) are not supported," The statement added, "cell phones with prepaid plans may not work with the phone notification service, phone notifications cannot be used with Voice over IP (VoIP), and VoIP numbers that are ported to a local provider are not eligible for the service."

While it may come as no surprise to many, if you've already linked a phone number to your Battle.net account and played Overwatch 2, you won't have to do any additional paperwork when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28.
