Google didn't inform developers prior STADIA's closure

Most of them learn about it from headlines

Can you imagine what it's like to find out that you no longer have a job from a news report on the web instead from the company you had a deal with? That just happened to hundreds of developers who worked for Google STADIA directly.

Today, in a interview with Phil Harrison, the Google Stadia boss; announced that the cloud video games service operated by Google will be shut down in 2023 as it did not have the success they expected.

Kept them in the dark for a long time…

Public Relations and Content Strategist for Resolution Games, Jim Squires shared on Twitter how many developers were frustrated with the recent news as Google didn’t inform them of the imminent closure.

A good amount of them were working on several games that were scheduled for release in the last quarter of the year, meaning that there is a possibility that Google ends up refusing to pay for these games. If you didn’t know STADIA offered the best dev revenue among every game streaming service available so, the investment and projected earnings of each of these studios are now uncertain, which leaves these companies stranded with no information other than what is available on the web.

Surprisingly, even big companies like Bungie were unaware of the situation, as players start worrying and asking about migration options for Destiny 2 in their forum. The company said that they just learned about Stadia shutting down like everyone else however they started conversations with Google about next steps and will announce the information once they have a plan of action… ouch.

What a lousy way to end things… What are your thoughts on STADIA’s shutdown? Remember to share your thoughts in the comments below.
