Tokyo Game Show is one of the most important video game festivals in the east, nonetheless, even if this edition was filled with good news the attendance numbers were surprisingly lower than expected.
In its latest press release, the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association organizer of the Tokyo Game Show shared the total of people who visited the physical venue over the weekend, which means between September 15-18, 2022. The report gave us detailed numbers for each day. However, is important to note that the first two days were directed specifically to members of the game industry and press.
- Thursday, September 15, 2022: 23,051
- Friday, September 16, 2022: 27,614 (21,066 business + 6,548 general visitors)
- Saturday, September 17, 2022: 47,236
- Sunday, September 18, 2022: 40,291
To put these numbers in perspective, the Tokyo Game Show 2019 attracted 262,076 visitors which makes TGS 2022 attendees only half of these numbers, performing incredible low for an event of such scale.
Of course, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the foreign tourism restrictive policies in Japan are the main reasons for the lack of attendees. Let’s say that we are not surprised at all as the organizer held a limited physical event where only approved influencers and members of the press could attend.
On the other hand, this edition was a hybrid with virtual and in-person events held all weekend; so we are still waiting for the total viewers on the official online streaming programs among other data which the organizer has announced will be released on a later date. Hopefully next year, things will get better and more people could have the chance to attend the event. Actually, the organizer confirmed the dates for the Tokyo Game Show 2023 which will take place on September 21-24, 2023; so start saving for those tickets!
