After 36 years, PSP, PS3, and PS4 designer says goodbye

Masayasu Ito is retiring. In the past decades, he was jointly responsible for several console generations as PlayStation hardware designer and Sony Interactive Entertainment director.

SIE has announced that Masayasu Ito, the company's representative director, and vice president, will step down on October 1, 2022.

Lin Tao, who has previously held this position, will take his place. Kiichiro Urata, current SVP Head of Japan Asia Partner Development & Relations, will also be named a director.

Ito spent eleven years at Sony Corporation before joining Sony Interactive Entertainment (then Sony Computer Entertainment) in April 2008. During that time, he was in charge of the console manufacturer's hardware development and operations, as well as hardware planning, which included the PS5 and PSVR.

Masayasu Ito was initially in charge of developing PS2 peripherals and PlayStationOne LCD monitors. When the PSP's development began, Ito was tasked with designing the handheld. Later, he worked on the development of the PS3 hardware, as well as the PS4 hardware and system software.

According to Bloomberg, Masayasu Ito is stepping down from his position due to age limitations; to spend more time with his family, and enjoy retirement. The decision is not the result of internal disagreements or alleged operational changes at Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan.
