Making it Nintendo’s second highest-grossing mobile game

It is not a secret how mobile games sometimes can end up being capable of generating incredible amounts of money, as in this generation many players prefer the mobile version of many already well-known titles and let’s say that Mario Kart Tour is among them.

While this is not comparable to other mobile releases like Diablo Immortal or Pokémon Go, the mobile racing game, it's still been quite successful and has been demonstrating its ability to earn money.

Back in the day, Nintendo revealed that Mario Kart Tour surpassed 200 million downloads and $200 million in player spending since its release in 2019. Now, a new report from Sensor Tower has updated these numbers revealing that the mobile game has now generated over $293 million for Nintendo.

A new monetization method…

Mario Kart Tour includes a gacha mechanic, which the company is planning to get rid off in October; where players fire off a pipe to unlock a new item or character. Of course, this method had helped to make most of its earnings, only complemented by the monthly Gold Pass subscriptions priced at $4.99 USD.

As we were saying, the company is planning to replace this mechanic with a Spotlight Shop a rotating item shop that preserves its monetization aspects, just getting rid of the gambling feeling. In Nintendo's own words, "New drivers, karts and gliders, as well as drivers, karts and gliders that have appeared in the past will be available. Along with this, the pipe you can fire by using rubies will be removed."

In the eyes of many, this may slow down their earnings, however, players are extremely happy with this news and the company is pretty confident that this new monetization model will work smoothly as is easier for them to access their favourite items.

Will Mario Kart Tour be able to deliver acceptable numbers for Nintendo? Let’s remember that Fire Emblem Heroes is Nintendo’s highest-grossing mobile game, with over $1 billion in revenue. Only time will say if the mobile racing game can stand the test of time.
