Sony and Tencent have both acquired a stake in FromSoftware. Kadokawa Corporation, the company's parent company, announced this on Tuesday. The two companies will jointly acquire 30% of the studio behind Elden Ring and Dark Souls.

Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, confirms that the new shares will be distributed to Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sixjoy Hong Kong, a Tencent subsidiary. Sony will acquire 14.09 percent of FromSoftware, according to the press release.

Sixjoy is acquiring 16.25 percent of the company's stock. The remaining 69.66 percent will remain in the hands of Kadokawa. The money will be paid between September 7 and September 12.

According to Kadokawa Corporation, the money will help the company release its games in more countries. In Japan, the company already does this, but in other countries, FromSoftware relies on other companies. Bandai Namco, for example, published Elden Ring and the Dark Souls trilogy, whereas Activision published Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In addition, the company intends to invest in "developing new intellectual properties."

“Through the implementation of the fund procurement, FromSoftware will aim to proactively invest in the development of more powerful game IP for itself to strengthen FromSoftware’s development capabilities and will seek to establish a framework that allows the expansion of the scope of its own publishing in the significantly growing global market,” the statement reads.

Kadokawa Corporation additionally explains that Tencent and its subsidiaries are strong in developing mobile games and other network technologies. The company also indicates that they want to strengthen its long-term relationship with Sony. The three companies involved do not share specific plans for possible collaborations.
