What has changed from one title to another?

It's been nine years since The Last of Us arrived on PlayStation 4, taking gamers by surprise and making thousands of fans around the world.

A remastered version of the game saw the light of day on July 29, 2014, including graphical improvements that would positively impact the game's reception.

Nine years after its original release, The Last of Us Part I, an installment created for the Playstation 5, returns with the full single-player story of The Last of Us and the acclaimed prequel chapter, Left Behind, which explores the events that forever changed the lives of Ellie and her best friend, Riley.

What are the differences between the original title and Part I

The question of what differentiates The Last of Us Part I from the title released in 2013, or The Last of Us Remastered, has been a common one among fans of the game. Shaun Escayg, the game's creative director, states the studio's point of view: "In my opinion, what makes this a remake and not an enhanced version is the sum of its advancements. It's not just the same characters, environments, art direction, etc. on superior hardware.''

''We've completely redesigned everything from the art direction, lighting, and technology to the character designs. We've put into practice everything we've learned over the last decade since we released the original and used that new technology to create something that stays true to the original but redesigned it to fit today," he explains.

In addition, combat and sound have also seen improvements. The original work ensured that no two battles and no two games were the same, The Last of Us Part I expands this to a higher level thanks to the PlayStation 5 hardware. John Bellomy, the lead programmer, says: “A lot of the changes in the combat system could broadly be described as taking something that we had to hack together.''

''There are sequences in the original game that are pre-scripted, that just play out in a very particular way.” Bellomy examples enemy search and flanking behavior: PS3 hardware limitations meant those behaviors couldn’t analyze the environment and adapt accordingly.

The Last of Us Part I will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 2, 2022. In addition to the standard edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition will also arrive on the next generation console.
